FabTime Press Release: FabTime Offers Free One-Hour Talk on Cycle Time Management to U.S. Wafer Fabs

San Jose, CA | October 4, 2005

Are you kicking off a new cycle time improvement effort? Do you want to ensure that your production personnel are thinking about cycle time as they make operational decisions? Do you use the best metrics for improving cycle time? FabTime is currently offering to have Jennifer Robinson (our co-founder and cycle time management newsletter editor) visit your site to give a one-hour talk on the factors that influence cycle time in wafer fabs, and the best metrics for cycle time improvement. This talk is a sub-set of our one-to-two day cycle time management course, and is being offered at no charge to semiconductor wafers fabs located in the United States. The talk will be paired with a one-hour demonstration of FabTime’s web-based digital dashboard software, with emphasis on ways that the software supports cycle time improvement efforts. The outline of the talk follows.

Fundamentals of Wafer Fab Cycle Time
  • Introduction: Motivation for cycle time reduction and overview of typical fab cycle times
  • Cycle time and utilization: Utilization is the biggest driver of cycle time. Other factors like downtime also impact cycle time via utilization.
  • Cycle time and variability: Variability (in arrivals or process times) shifts the curve (of cycle time vs. utilization) up and to the left. Variability makes it impossible to achieve theoretical cycle time in any real fab.
  • Cycle time and equipment downtime: Downtime increases cycle time 1) by increasing equipment utilization and 2) by increasing variability.
  • Metrics: A review of metrics that are helpful for monitoring short-term cycle times.
